A Beautiful Way to Purify Your Air

By this time of year, we Phoenicians start feeling cooped up in our air-conditioned homes, offices, and automobiles. Spending so much time indoors is bad for our health. Since indoor air quality is far worse than outdoor, we end up with allergies, headaches, asthma, and even diseases caused by these toxins.

There is a beautiful and inexpensive way to purify your indoor air: HOUSEPLANTS. Bringing green plants indoors cleans your air by removing hazardous chemicals such as formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene. Plants filter these toxins and create oxygen, making your indoor environment healthier.

NASA did a study on this very topic and came up with a list of the best plants to kill toxins. Here are a few that came out on top:
Dragon Tree Plant from Cactus Flower
Dragon Tree (Dracaena marginata)
Spathiphyllum Plant from Cactus Flower
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
Dracaena Plant from Cactus Flower
Variegated Corn Plant (Dracaena fragrans “Massangeana”)
Chinese Evergreen Plant from Cactus Flower
Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema modestum)

The next time you need to send a gift, think of a houseplant or dish garden. You'll be giving something long-lasting and health-promoting. Plants are appropriate for every occasion, and are the perfect gift for that someone who has everything.

NASA recommends 15-18 houseplants per household for optimum air quality. How many plants to you have?

A Lotta Show for a Little Dough!

This August, $10 gets your 10 big, bold sunflowers! These blooms are so large, we could only fit HALF of the Fresh Ten wrap in the picture. Aren't they just gorgeous?

Sunflowers are a classic summer flower and are easy to just drop in a vase and enjoy. You can scatter a single stem in reused bottles throughout the house, or create two or three arrangements in vases with varying heights on your dining table. Of course, if you have a container that's big enough, you could display them all together for a dramatic display.

We have some ideas for you on our Pinterest board of sunflowers, but in the meantime here are a couple of our favorites:
Surprise your house guests with this whimsical display of sunflowers in rain boots!

Water pitchers always make a perfect vase for sunflowers - especially for summer parties.

Use different size glasses, old olive oil bottles, mason jars or whatever vessel you have handy to make a display along your kitchen window!

Sunflowers are also a long-lasting flower, which is just another reason to stop by your closest Cactus Flower store and pick up yours today!

Our Customers are AWESOME

We are overwhelmed by the generosity of our customers. During our 40th anniversary celebration last Friday, we asked for bottled water donations for the Vista del Camino Hydration Station. Each store accepted donations, and together we collected 95 cases - 2,280 bottles - of water for the community's most vulnerable. Isn't that amazing? We think so, and we're grateful.

Each case that was donated was worth a raffle ticket for a drawing of a YEAR of flowers, and the name drawn was Nonie Mavpin! Congratulations, Nonie!

Hydrate the Homeless at our 40th Anniversary Event

The Valley's heat can be deceptively deadly to the vulnerable, especially the homeless. The city of Scottsdale's Vista del Camino serves as a Hydration Station for these individuals, providing bottled water, sunscreen, hats, and lip balm.

As part of our 40th Anniversary celebration, we've teamed up with Vista del Camino to collect bottled water as we head into the scorching summer months.

On June 15th, drop off a case of bottled water to any of our Cactus Flower stores, and you'll be entered in to win flowers for a year!  Each case you donate is good for one entry, so if you bring three cases, you'll be entered into the drawing three times. The more you donate, the greater your odds of winning!

We started as a family-owned and operated business, including Brother and Sister Eric and Kristina who grew up watering the plants and running deliveries. Today, Eric and Kristina run the daily operations of Cactus Flower.
Our customers have helped us grow to be one of FTD and Teleflora’s Top 10 florists in North America. Most importantly, we have the pleasure of being part of our customers’ lives and it’s most important occasions: from births to funerals, weddings to anniversaries, and every holiday in between. Where were YOU in 1972?

Cactus Flower is celebrating its 40 year anniversary this summer. That's right, Cactus Flower has been serving the Valley since 1972! We're kicking off our celebration and that you join us on a trip back to the groovy era that was the 70's.

So, where were you in 1972? Were you rockin' out to Don McLean? Were you watching the first season of The Waltons? Or was it the year you were born? Send us a story or photo of you in the 70's, and we'll include it in our 40th Anniversary Album. We're looking for any kind of photo or story (some of the Phoenix area would be especially great!) that brings us back to the year the Luoma family built the first Cactus Flower on Scottsdale Rd.

We have no idea who any of these people are, but they are groovy!
BONUS: Just for sharing with us, you'll be entered in to win a Cactus Flower arrangement AND a $150 gift card to Dominick's Steakhouse!

All you need to do is email us at info@cactusflower.com with your story or photo by June 10, 2012. Please note that your email gives us permission to publish your content on our social media channels and in our stores.

Thanks for sharing, Cactus Flower family. You're far out!

It's Prom Season!

We've already had a few proms in the Valley, but the majority of them take place in the next few weeks. Our stores have been flooded with juniors and seniors (and their moms) shopping for the perfect prom corsage to match the dress, or the boutonniere to serve as the finishing touch of on a crisp tuxedo.

One of our top-selling corsages this year isn't a traditional wrist corsage; it's our Fashionista arm band, which features white cymbidium orchids on a crystal, adjustable band that can be worn on the upper arm or wrist. The best attribute of this choice is that it matches any color dress.

For something a little more exotic, our Enchantment corsage features green cymbidium orchids with peacock feathers. Gals wearing blue, brown, black or green will find this corsage to be a fabulous accent.

If she's anything but ordinary, the Cross My Heart corsage might be the one for her.Succulents, safari sunset, and hypericum combine with copper wire. Wouldn't it be perfect with a black, red or green dress?

For the guys, we have the largest selection of prom boutonnieres in Cactus Flower history. Choose from billy ball boutonnieres to a blinged-out calla lily.

The Color of 2012: Tangerine Tango

Oh, how we love following the Pantone Fashion Color Reports. The Pantone Spring 2012 report included a vivacious reddish orange called Tangerine Tango, which subsequently inspired the Pantone folks to name it the Color of 2012.

If 2012 is the year to recharge, then this color was appropriately chosen. What could be more motivating than a punchy pop of orange?

Fashion designers such as Tommy Hilfiger, Adrienne Vittadini, and Elie Tahari have included Tangerine Tango in their spring lines. Home decor stores like Lamps Plus have a Tangerine Tango Pinterest board. And Sephora launched a complete line of product in Tangerine Tango, as well as a national marketing campaign:

Well, it's only natural for Cactus Flower to jump on the bandwagon with an exclusive collection of arrangements in this energizing color! Check out Cactus Flower's Tangerine Tango collection, featuring fashion-forward floral bouquets in orange hues. Or click on our own Pinterest board to see the arrangements as well as home decor that inspires us.

3 Ways to Fight the Post-Holiday Blues

Now that the holidays are over, the battle against the winter doldrums begins for many people. The colorful decorations and bright lights come down, making the home feel dark and empty. You've also been floating with anticipation for several weeks, and now there is nothing to look forward to. Combined with gray skies and frigid temperatures, it's no wonder the post-holiday blues are so common.

Here are some ways to slide back into reality without it bringing your down:
  1. Give your home a fresh look. After you've un-decked the halls, you'll have a fresh perspective of your home's interior. Re-arrange your furniture for a refreshing start to the new year. Paint a room, or take advantage of January sales and buy yourself new throw pillows or a new rug. It's amazing how far $50 can go to change the look of a space.
  2. Plan a party. Our calendars have been packed with fun things to look forward to for the last six weeks, and now it's back to the daily grind. The Super Bowl is the only event on the horizon, and to many of us, who cares? Plan an intimate party with your best friends to share your holiday memories. Give it a theme - like a winter luau - for more interest and fun.
  3. Bring home flowers. Flowers fight depression and chase away anxiety. A Harvard study has proven that simply having flowers in the rooms in which you spend the most time will lift your mood, and that you'll feel more positive, compassionate, and enthusiastic. You don't have to break the bank to enjoy this affordable luxury; Cactus Flower always offers a $10 bouquet of a featured flower, and all you need to do is drop it into a vase. This January, the Fresh Ten offer is 10 tulips for just $10. Watch our Fresh Ten Film for tips on how to enjoy them at home.
